Introduction
The III Year BDS students are trained in the basic principles of general surgery. They undergo training in the Department of General Surgery of Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences which is located in the same campus. The students are trained through clinical meeting, lectures, case discussion, group discussion and observation of various surgical procedures.
Faculty of the General Surgery department of Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences play an important role in teaching the III year BDS Students. The department of general surgery also conducts several camps in surrounding areas every month where screening and diagnosing various surgical conditions.
The III Year students have Operation Theatre postings where they observe a range of surgeries performed. Advanced head and neck cancer surgery, reconstruction and major abdominal surgeries are also performed. Minimally invasive surgery is one of its strengths with several advanced procedures being done routinely. The surgeons are adept in performing complex abdominal surgeries through the laparoscope.
The hospital’s centrally air-conditioned operation theatre complex has state-of-the-art equipment, adjoined by a sophisticated surgical intensive care unit, using the latest life support systems. The department also has an upper and lower GI endoscopy unit. The well-equipped emergency unit follows internationally recognised advanced trauma life support protocols.
The III Year BDS students have 5 hours of clinical postings a week in General Surgery.
