Oral Medicine & Radiology

Introduction

The Department deals with the diagnosis and management of oral manifestations of systemic disease and management of medically compromised patients. The faculty also specializes in management of Temporo-mandibular disorders and radiographic interpretation of complex Oro-facial disorders. An exclusive Neuromuscular Dentistry department with the faculty qualified in the practice of Neuromuscular dentistry and ICCMO (International College of Cranio Mandibular Orthopaedics) India members, which is the new face of dental practice the world is warming up to.

A good physician treats the disease, but a great physician treats the patient with the disease, we aspire to be great.

Research at SMIDS is rapidly growing and we strive to provide collegiate dental researchers with state-of-the-art laboratory facilities to meet the continually evolving oral health care needs of dental patients. Research in our Department is carried out in a number of key areas with laboratory and clinical researchers working collaboratively. Our unit aims towards development of improved oral health and clinically effective treatment at both the public health and individual patient levels. The research units at each department provide a cross-cutting theme of activity with the stimulation of knowledge transfer and the potential to improve both clinical practice and oral health.

Teaching Programme

  • Special lectures are conducted by eminent faculty of the specialty from other universities who are brought in to educate the students on specific topics.
  • Problem based learning approach is adopted to give the students a “real life” experience of dealing with patients in clinical situations.
  • Chair – side teaching methods are adopted to give the students a thorough clinical approach.
  • Accessibility of staff for the students is important so that no student remains shy and introvert.
  • A notice board is dedicated to the UGs and PGs which have to be managed by them in the way they deem appropriate, which is evaluated for content and quality by the staff and competitions with winner declaration being a regular practice.
  • Feedback from the students and patients from time to time, helps us shape the future of the department.
  • Student evaluation is conducted during theory and clinical postings by internal assessment (written, oral and practical). Internal assessment (Theory and Practical) exams are conducted for both undergraduates and post graduates.
  • Regular intra department staff Meetings to ascertain our current academic progress and future plans. Systematic follow up on the programs envisaged and ensuring compliance.
  • All post-graduate students and faculty actively participate in state and National level seminars, continuing education programs and conferences to enrich their knowledge about the subject and keep track of the latest developments in the field. In addition BDS students participate in medical camps in villages. The PG students are compulsorily send for postings in allied departments like Cancer wards, Gen Radiology, Dermatology, ENT…etc
  • The faculties are proactive about going “beyond the books” and encourage students to think beyond the mundane approaches of problem management and patient care. They are taught to improvise on available resources and enhance patient care by innovative means. Few of the lectures is exclusively devoted to the emerging trends and the innumerous possibilities in dentistry and allied fields.
  • The faculty lays emphasis on improvising on current approaches and explore new ideas on diagnostic modalities available to the patient. Students are encouraged to come out with new ideas and pursue them. The department can confidently boast that its PG’s have done CBCT Sialographies in actual patients which may be the only Department with this feather in the cap in India/ Abroad. Sialolith retrieval has attained new meaning in our department with the procurement of the ‘Dormia’ Baskets for sialolith retrieval, avoiding major surgical intervention to a lot of patients, again a major contribution of our staff toward PG empowerment very few colleges can boast of.
