Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Introduction

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a branch that deals with the art of diagnosis and treatment of various diseases, pathologies and defects involving the facial region. This specialty has evolved through the ages and presently the Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon deals with various craniofacial pathologies in a multi disciplinary environment. 

The Department offers an under graduate and a three-year post-graduate teaching programme leading to a Masters degree awarded by the Tamilnadu Dr. MGR medical University.  This program is approved and accredited by the Dental Council of India. 

The section of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery has a varied scope. The under graduate program deals with extraction of teeth and the complications arising, subsequent management, along with the management of medical emergencies on the dental chair. The post-graduate program beginning with complicated extraction goes on to involve major surgical procedures. Various research projects are also allocated to students to train them in research methodology.

  • Management of patients from preoperative through postoperative phases of illness
  • Application of surgical knowledge to the clinical situation
  • To be familiar with current surgical literature
  • Demonstrate technical skill, clinical judgment necessary for independent practice
  • Gain working knowledge of other surgical subspecialties
  • Acquire the ability to supervise and direct management of critically ill or injured patients.

Today the scope of OMFS practice continues to expand as a result of educational process that is responsive to the changing needs of the specialty.

Facilities

  • The Maxillofacial Surgery unit is an integral part of the Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital (SMIMS).

  • The facilities include a fully equipped major and minor Operation Theatres (OT), ICU and wards, catering to all strata of patients. The major OT is fully equipped with the latest devices for monitoring and intervention for all types of surgical procedures

  • State of the art armamentarium including titanium fixation implants, craniofacial distraction devices, dental implants, micro saw system and all other surgical equipments

  • Spacious treatment rooms, CT scan, a digital impression scanner

Teaching Programme

This program involves lectures, seminars, clinical experiences and clinical teaching in the last two years of the four-year dental curriculum. Students are exposed to a wide variety of orofacial pathologies and all students get an extensive knowledge of asepsis in clinical practice along with clinical experience in extractions and observation and assistance in minor and major surgical procedures. Those interested in research are able to collaborate in some of the ongoing research projects in the Department.
