Sree Mookambika Institute of Dental Sciences

Oral Pathology & Microbiology

Introduction

The Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology was established in the year 1999 at Sree Mookambika Institute of Dental Sciences. This specialty of Dentistry includes Dental Anatomy, Histology, Embryology and Pathology. Forensic Odontology, an emerging field in Dentistry also comes under this department.

Dental Anatomy and Histology forms the foundation to better understanding of Clinical Dentistry for first year undergraduates and Oral Pathology teaches third year undergraduates to identify various pathologic conditions clinically as well as on histo-pathologic examination. The department has a well-equipped histopathology lab for tissue processing where routine H & E staining, special staining, Immunohistochemistry and Exfoliative Cytology are carried out regularly to facilitate precise and accurate diagnosis for appropriate treatment plan.  There is a Haematologic laboratory where blood investigations can be done.

  • To provide knowledge of basic dental anatomy and morphology which is absolutely essential for further study of Dentistry
  • To identify various pathologic conditions clinically as well as histopathologically for appropriate treatment plan
  • To acquire knowledge in the basics of molecular based techniques, immunology, genetics and to accomplish research in oral cancer and other oral diseases.

To become a centre of excellence in the field of Oral Pathology through futuristic development by introducing new technologies like

  • Cell culture labs
  • Stem cell research
  • Karyotyping
  • Molecular studies

Facilities

  • A well-equipped clinical examination room, student's laboratory, and a museum with numerous mounted specimens, models and posters

  • A well-equipped histopathology lab - routine H & E staining, special staining, Immunohistochemistry and Exfoliative Cytology are carried out regularly.

  • A hematologic laboratory where blood investigations can be done

  • A unit with sophisticated instruments including
o Trinocular research microscope with camera
      o Polarizing microscope
      o Darkfield microscope
      o Phase contrast microscope
      o Pentadigital microscope with camera
